A clear path to your first setup
A hardware wallet setup is a small process with an important purpose: helping you take control of your private keys while keeping your recovery information safely in your hands.
Before you begin
Start by checking that your device came from a trusted source, then set aside a few uninterrupted minutes. Use a private space, a reliable computer or phone, and a cable or power source suited to your device. Visit Ledger.com/start by typing the address yourself or following a verified link. Avoid sponsored search results, unsolicited messages, and lookalike domains. The official guide will direct you to the setup instructions relevant to your device.
Make your first connection
Follow the prompts shown on the device and in Ledger’s official software. Read each screen before confirming; the device is designed to keep important approvals visible to you. If you are asked to create a PIN, choose one you can remember without writing it where someone else might find it. During setup, you may be shown a recovery phrase. Write it down offline, in the order presented, and check every word carefully. Do not photograph it, save it to cloud storage, or enter it into a computer or phone.
Use official companion software
When setup calls for an app, download it from Ledger’s own website rather than from a link in an unsolicited email or message. The Ledger Live page is the official place to learn about Ledger’s companion application and access its download options. Check the publisher and address before installing, and keep both the app and your device firmware current using the instructions provided through official channels.
Keep the recovery phrase private
Your recovery phrase is a master backup, not a password to share with a support agent. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access assets associated with it. Ledger support will never need you to reveal it. Store the written phrase somewhere private and protected from damage, and be wary of anyone who creates urgency, promises to “validate” your phrase, or asks you to connect to an unfamiliar site. If a screen or message feels unexpected, pause and verify the next step through Ledger’s official support pages.
Take the next step with confidence
After setup, learn how to confirm transaction details on your device before approving them. Small habits make a difference: check addresses carefully, keep recovery information offline, and treat unexpected requests as a reason to stop. A hardware wallet can help you manage access, but it cannot make every decision for you. Understanding what you approve remains essential.
For device-specific instructions, current downloads, and troubleshooting, go directly to Ledger Support. These official resources are the best place to confirm any step that differs from this general overview. This page is an independent educational guide, not Ledger’s website or a substitute for the manufacturer’s directions.
Go at your own pace. If anything asks you to reveal your recovery phrase, stop.
